Correcting Errors: Date of Birth or Name Discrepancies

In a lot of applications, the discrepancies arise in names, spellings, date, month or year of the applicant, specifically when the date in the records doesn't match school records, passport, or an Aadhaar card. Discrepancies can arise due to many reasons such as -

  • A clerical error or typo made at the time of original registration since back then, the records were mostly handwritten and were not recorded online.

  • Name spelling differences of the applicant or the parents, between the certificate and other identity documents.

For correcting these errors and discrepancies a formal application under the prescribed form is required to be made  to the Registrar of Births and Deaths for the relevant zone, which is supported by documents such as-

  1. an affidavit explaining the discrepancy.

  2. Documents such as school records, high school certificate.

  3. hospital documents, maternity ward receipt.

  4. gazette notification- where required.

Where the authorities are not satisfied with the documents and explanation produced by the applicant to clear the discrepancy, in such cases, a formal petition/application needs to be filed before the court of competent jurisdiction with the assistance of an advocate, detailing the facts, circumstances that led to the error and reasons as to why the same should be corrected. Necessary evidence in support of the facts is necessary.

Processing Time and Status Tracking

If the application submitted by the applicant is correct, consists of all the details, and is accompanied by all the required documents, the authorities in Delhi in such cases generally takes  7 to 15 working days to process the request and issue the Birth Certificate/NABC.

In cases of Delayed registration of births, especially when the order of a magistrate is required,  in such cases, timelines can vary from 4-8 weeks, because of the additional steps and scrutiny involved.

The application status can be tracked directly on the e-District portal using the application reference number generated at submission. If, however, the application shows no progress or is rejected due to any reason, usually a physical visit is required to clear the defects and re-file the application.
